Coaching Clichés

Industry Jargon

I was caught out…. A client didn’t understand my question, and they looked really puzzled and a little embarrassed. This is not a good thing when you’re a coach!

We all do it from time to time – we slip lazily into our own industry jargon. It feels comfortable to us, we’re on the inside track and we know what we’re talking about.

So as an aide-memoire for me, maybe a few other coaches out there, and for all coaching clients everywhere, here are a few favourite phrases I will be trying to avoid in the future.

#1 - Lean In

Coaching Cliches

Thank you for this one Sheryl Sandberg! It can take some explaining - and there's an easier way to ask.

#2 - Who are you?

Coaching Cliches

This is a classic example of such a vague question the client doesn't quite know where to do. That's sometimes ok, but if they can think about qualities, it suddenly feels tangible and real. Be specific!

#3 - Lost?

Coaching Cliches

This one always sounds to me as though we've got los somewhere. Maybe we have, but meandering back doesn't feel purposeful. NB I still love you Brené Brown, just not this particular expression!

#4 - Driver!

Coaching Cliches

In coaching, it's common to want to dig under the surface of the conversation to see what is really important about the particular topic for them. We can get out of our own jargon by using everyday language to help our client connect with the emotion that is driving their thoughts.

Do you have a favourite? Please let me know!
